MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Stephen Ross is ready to take his talents out of South Beach – or at least at some point.

On Thursday it was disclosed that the NFL approved the Miami Dolphins owner's succession plan during the recent NFL owners meeting in Boca Raton.

According to league sources, the plan would give New York businessman Bruce Beal Jr. the right of first option to purchase the franchise if Ross dies or decides to sell.

The Beal family and Ross have history together.

In 1972, Ross founded New York-based real estate and development empire Related Companies.

Beal's father worked side-by-side with Ross while his son moved up the ranks.

The younger Beal is now is the president and general partner of the company – which is now called Related Beal following a merger in 2013.

CBS4's news partner The Miami Herald reports that Ross has no intention of selling the team.

Instead, a source called it "nothing more than smart succession planning."

But if Beal did take the helm, he would be the Fins' fourth owner.
