Tampa Officer Wounded During Shootout Expected To Survive

TAMPA (CBSMiami/AP) — Fortunate news out of Tampa regarding an injured police officer.

The officer who was wounded Saturday during a shootout in a hotel parking lot was visited by Tampa's mayor and police chief and is expected to survive.

Tampa Police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said 53-year-old Jose Rodriguez likely owes his life to his bullet resistant vest.

The two suspects were both shot and killed.

Rodriguez, who's been an officer for 13 years, was shot Saturday afternoon after he was called to investigate an altercation.

Officials received a 911 call from someone who saw two men fighting at a gas station. Police said Sunday that one of the suspects, 51-year-old Leroy King, was dead when officers arrived.

The other suspect, 46-year-old Patrick Matthew McManamon, fired at officers. They fired back.

It wasn't known what started the initial altercation.

"We're thankful no one else was around," Davis said.

Police said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the incident, which took place near a brewery, the University of South Florida and the Busch Gardens theme park.

"It's very early on," Davis said. "There's a lot we're trying to piece together."

The shooting is the first time a Tampa officer has been shot since the fatal shootings of Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab in 2010. Dontae Morris was later convicted in the killings and received the death penalty.

In August, a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy was wounded in the leg when he and two other deputies investigated a call of shots fired near Thonotosassa. That shooter remains at large.
