Florida House Votes To Repeal Red Light Cameras

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — The Florida House voted on a bill to end the use of red light cameras in the state.
The House on Wednesday voted 83-33 in favor of a bill that would ban the use of cameras starting in July 2019. The legislation heads to the Florida Senate, where a similar proposal has stalled.
Rep. Frank Artiles, a Miami Republican, called red light cameras a "back door tax" for cities and counties. Legislators in 2010 first authorized local governments to use cameras to issue tickets to drivers who run red lights.
Opponents of the bill (HB 4027) argued red light cameras help traffic safety. Rep. Irving Slosberg, whose daughter was killed in a traffic accident, said Florida has some of the highest number of traffic fatalities in the nation.
