Dolphins Rescind Transition Tag From Olivier Vernon

DAVIE (CBSMiami) – Things have certainly changed in Dolphin-land in the last 24 hours.

At this time on Tuesday the Dolphins appeared to have acquired Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso from the Eagles and had put the transition tag on Olivier Vernon.

On Wednesday morning all of that had changed.

The trade with Philadelphia is on hold and could be erased all together thanks to a shoulder injury that Maxwell suffered late last season.

Shortly after that news broke, multiple reports surfaced saying that Miami had pulled the transition tag the team placed on Vernon last week.

This doesn't come as a big surprise after the Dolphins signed Mario Williams to a two-year deal on Tuesday afternoon.

Vernon is now free to negotiate with any team he desires and will likely draw a pricy contract as he is one of the top pass rushers available in free agency.

Miami is now eligible to receive a compensatory draft pick if Vernon signs elsewhere, which is more than likely.

Had the Dolphins kept the transition tag on Vernon and not matched another team's contract offer, they would have lost him for nothing.

With Vernon heading elsewhere, Miami seems content to move forward with Williams and veteran sack master Cameron Wake as the team's primary pass rushers.
