JUPITER (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins entered spring training with the expectations of having a competition for the team's closer job between incumbent A.J. Ramos and Carter Capps.

Now the job seems to belong to Ramos again.

The Marlins announced on Tuesday that Capps would have Tommy John surgery, ending his 2016 season before it began.

The operation will be performed on Tuesday by specialist Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

Capps is expected to return in time for opening day of 2017.

He missed the final two months of last season due to elbow soreness and sat out three months in 2014 for the same reason.

Capps cut a throwing session short last week and underwent an MRI to the same elbow.
