Early Voters Voice Their Choice In Broward

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Early voting started Saturday in much of Florida, including Broward.

20 different sites across the county opened their doors to voters so they could voice their choice.

And many did, glad to get the ball rolling in what has already proven to be an ugly election cycle.

"It's a little sad to see the kind of stuff they've resorted to, going back and forth with all the trash talk and staying away from the issues that are relevant and important," said voter Amy Ritch, who hoped things would get better as November nears.

Ritch went to the Miramar Library to vote. It was a family affair, with her brother accompanying her.

"I said, you know, let me take the opportunity to read up on it and see where the locations are," said Larry Bravo. "And I told my sister about it and we came out today and we were able to. It took two seconds."

The Broward County Supervisor of Elections pointed out voter registration has increased. So has the number of people who changed party affiliation in preparation for this presidential primary.

Brenda Snipes also said research shows that when voter interest is high, voter turnout is higher.

The Florida primary race is key for the candidates as Republicans sharpen their tactics and Democrats solidify their campaigns.

Today, thunderous cheers greeted Florida Senator Marco Rubio as he spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland.

"These young Americans have the chance to fulfill an incredible potential and destiny. We have to give them a chance," Rubio told the crowd. "And they won't have a chance if a Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders is elected. And they won't have a chance if the conservative movement is hijacked by someone who is not a conservative."

Senator Rubio was referring to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who stopped in Orlando Saturday afternoon to speak to a crowd of about 20,000 before heading to West Palm Beach for a press conference at 9 p.m.

"I've done many, many jobs in Miami with Jorge Perez and with Gil Dezer and Michael Dezer," said Donald Trump. "We've had great success and we've done many of the buildings in Miami, we have a lot of stuff. And it's been great. And as you know, Doral. And in Jupiter, we did a big job, very, very successful."
