OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) -- An investigation is underway after human remains were found in Oakland Park.

The disturbing discovery was made Wednesday near N.W. 20th Avenue and 26th Street by two men.

Wence Cory said his friend first alerted him to the remains but thought it may have been a joke.

"He said it might be a Halloween thing so that took away the severity of it," said Cory. "But lo and behold, I seen like a staple on the vertebrae. And that wasn't a Halloween thing, ya know? You can look at the bones, at how they depreciated."

Cory and his friend then alerted the authorities.

"The skeleton was scattered. The more we looked around, the more we seen," Cory added, saying it looked like the bones had been there a long time. "Probably been here since they built this building. And then it had a book bag, with all kinds of debris and moss and stuff like that. So it was there for a while."

He said there was clothes and gym shoes found near the bag.

"At this point, we're not yet able to determine if it's male or female that died out in the field," said "We'll end up seeking the assistance of a forensic anthropologist to help us make a positive I.D," said Keyla Concepcion with the Broward Sheriff's Office.
