WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBSMiami) -- After a poor showing in South Carolina, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has suspended his campaign.

It comes following news that Donald Trump has been projected as the winner.

44 percent of South Carolina voters picked Trump to represent the Republican nomination, while 20 percent said the same for Cruz and 14 percent for Rubio, who came in second and third, respectively.

About a half an hour after polling closed Saturday, Jeb Bush garnered about 8 percent of the vote, prompting him to announce he's dropping out of the race.

It marked the end to a painful campaign that saw him trail roughly four to five candidates at every turn.

The GOP will next make their way to Nevada. Hillary Clinton took the state earlier in the day on the Democratic side.
