BROOKSVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) — A fender bender may have been the catalyst for a Florida man to take his own life.

Authorities say a 61-year-old man fatally shot himself in the emergency room of a Florida hospital after he was taken there for treatment.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins says in a statement that the shooting happened Tuesday evening after William Stark Adams was in a traffic crash.

Gaskins says Adams had turned in front of another vehicle and was injured, and crews treated him on the scene before taking him to nearby Brooksville Regional Hospital.

Gaskins says investigators found a "large volume" of hydrocodone and other pills with Adams.

Gaskins says that once Adams was at the emergency room, he fatally shot himself. Garksins says no one else was injured in the shooting.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
