HIALEAH GARDENS (CBSMiami) -- A South Florida motorist is counting his lucky stars after he was able to walk away without a scratch from a rollover crash Sunday in Hialeah Gardens.

"I just became a grandfather about two-and-a-half weeks ago, three weeks ago. And thank God I'll be around to see my granddaughter," said the driver, Nick Mekich of Pembroke Pines.

Driving north on West Okeechobee Road near N.W. 138th Street, Mekich said he was forced to take evasive action when another car drifted into his lane, causing him to lose control and plummet into a ditch along the side of the road.

"I seen a car coming over, veering into my lane. And I had a car on the side of me. I couldn't go to the left, I woulda hit him. So to avoid this one, I over-corrected and wound up over here (in the ditch)," explained Mekich.

His car flipped over before coming to a stop just feet from someone's backyard.

"It happens quickly. It happens in a matter of seconds. You just hope and pray that you don't hit anything and get crushed," he continued.

Several good Samaritans saw the accident and rushed over to help. They flipped the car back on its side and helped pull him out.

"Well, they talked Spanish and I don't speak Spanish. But whatever they said, it was like 'We're gonna get you out of this thing," Mekich joked.

Law enforcement said having his seat belt fastened is what saved his life. Mekich didn't need any medical attention and refused a ride in the ambulance.

Despite the car being totaled and towed away, Mekich was all smiles as a family friend picked him up to take him home. He parted ways offering his thanks to the strangers who helped him and included his praise to the officers who arrived quickly.

"I can't say enough about these state troopers. They did an excellent job, excellent job."
