MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Tiles flew off the top of a South Florida home after lightning zapped the roof, terrifying the couple who lives inside.

As wild weather swept across the area all afternoon Ted Desibio heard a loud boom and then his house suddenly started shaking.

Lightning struck the roof of his home, blowing tiles everywhere. Desibio ran outside, smelled smoke and dialed 911.

"I was watching television. My wife was in the kitchen. It was raining and lightning but then we heard a very loud bang and the house shook and it felt like it exploded from the inside out," said Desibio.

"I was supposed to go back to work but I was scared because it was like thunder-storming.  And all of a sudden I heard lightening and it was like I had a heart attack like the house was shaking," said neighbor Nikita Singh.

"It was very frightening. I never experienced anything like this before.  the house was hit, everything shook I could see some of the ceiling come down inside the house and thank god there was no fire," said Desibio.

He's thankful it was mostly damage to the outside, though he points out the strike may also have damaged many of their appliance but he says he and his wife are thankful it wasn't worse.
