When Mike Rumph was tabbed to become an assistant on the University of Miami's coaching staff, leaving Class 5A power American Heritage without a coach – many wondered what would happen to the Patriots.

It didn't take long for them to make a move.

SFHSSports confirmed Friday that American Heritage named Patrick Surtain its new head football coach.

Surtain, a former NFL All-Pro with the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs, served as a defensive assistant under Rumph during his tenure with the school.

Surtain's son, Patrick Jr., is a Class 2018 defensive back for the Patriots who already holds offers from Louisiana State, Alabama and Clemson.

DORAL ACADEMY HIRES STEWART

It's a busy time of year for coaching changes, as Doral Academy has hired former Hallandale offensive coordinator Jase Stewart to be its head football coach.

Stewart replaces Josh Sanders, who led the Firebirds to a 5-4 record in 2015.

Stewart's resume is impressive – having served under Miami Norland's Daryle Heidelburg as offensive coordinator during the Vikings' 2011 state championship run as well as working in the same position at Hallandale for the past three seasons under Dameon Jones.
