WEST MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A dog attack Thursday morning set off a series of tragic events for a couple in West Miami that ended with both of them hospitalized and their family pet dead.

It started at about 8:30 a.m. when a woman took her 3-year-old Chihuahua, named Gucci, out for a walk and they were attacked by two dogs.

The vicious attack killed the five-pound Chihuahua and left the woman mauled with lacerations up and down her body.

"My mother has 100 stitches in her arm," said Ada Rojas, the daughter of the woman attacked.

Upon hearing the news, Roja's 87-year-old father suffered a heart attack.

Both of Roja's parents were both taken to South Miami Hospital, where they spent most of the day.

Now they are home, grieving the loss of a loved one.

"We lost our pet. We lost a family member today," Rojas said.

Gucci was more than a feisty little guy – he had a big role to play.

"My parents are very old, so I was told two years ago, 'Get them a pet as it is very therapeutic,'" explained Rojas. "I got them a pet. Today my parents almost died because of that pet."

Police were able to apprehend the attacking dogs, which are American Bulldog mixes.

Neighbors said they think the dogs that attacked Gucci were strays.

However, animal control says on dog has a chip and a collar.

The dogs are now in a 10-day quarantine while authorizes try to locate possible owners.

If the owner or owners cannot be located, the dogs will be euthanized.
