MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A woman living out of her car with her dog  wants one thing money can't buy - to get her dog back.

Shelley, who didn't want to give her last name -- doesn't own much -- just a car and her beloved dog Lacey -- now both are gone.

Shelley and a friend live in the car in the Wal-Mart parking lot at State Road 7 and Oakland Park Blvd.

Early Wednesday morning a crook came up and stole that car.

Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputies said while Shelley and her friend slept, deputies said a man walked up to their car, knocked on their window and woke them up.

"He said that someone at Wal-Mart wants to see you, so I get out of the car heading for Walmart and all of sudden he drives off with the dog in the back," said Shelley.

BSO investigators said the crook approached the car and was able to secretly get the keys

"They had the keys on the dashboard. He reached in, grabbed the keys while they were sleeping, said somebody from Walmart was calling you.  They both got out," said Det. Mohammad Razi with BSO. "The suspect jumped in, started the car, pushed the gentleman away and left the parking lot."

For Shelley, it's devastating, mainly because her 8-year old dog is gone.

"I just want the dog back.  The belongings, I can always buy more stuff. I just want the dog back," said Shelley. "I was up all night worried about her.  Maybe she'll be abused."

This is supposed to be the season of giving -- but for Shelley and her friend -- they now have nothing.

"They're down on their luck. They're living in their car. This is their whole life and somebody comes up while they're sleeping and steals everything they got. They got nothing right now," said Razi.

Authorities are now searching for the culprit. Anyone with information is urged to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at (954) 493- TIPS.
