FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A mother and her child were hospitalized Sunday after they were struck by an SUV while crossing at a crosswalk.

Ft. Lauderdale Police said the woman was crossing near S.W. 35th Street with her child in a stroller when a vehicle heading eastbound on Davie Blvd hit them.

Flip flops, a stroller and other debris were strewn across the street as investigators bagged evidence.

The driver, Carmen Perez, remained on scene and was cooperative with officers.

"In a fraction of seconds and she was just under the car," said Perez, visibly shaken from the accident.

Several people were in the area when it happened.

"It's really bad. It's really sad to know exactly that someone got hit by a car. But, you know, it's a good thing that the person stayed on scene," said Husani Blake, a witness to the accident.

When asked why she did choose to stay, Perez couldn't help but laugh slightly at the thought of leaving the victims helpless.

"I didn't want to leave a coward. I want to be responsible," she said.

The mother and child were taken to Broward General Hospital in unknown condition.
