PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - Several people were injured when a minivan plowed into a restaurant in Plantation.

"Customer outside the restaurant pushed the gas instead of brakes and he went all in the restaurant," a restaurant worker told CBS4's Hank Tester.

Plantation Fire Rescue responded to Al Salam Middle Eastern restaurant at University Drive and Sunrise Boulevard quickly, sorting out the scene and treating the five injured customers.

Two of the injured were taken to Broward Health Medical Center with serious injuries – one declared a trauma patient – the other three were taken to Westside Regional with minor injuries.

"Blood everywhere," said the restaurant's owner, Maher Almasis. "Destroyed. Destruction inside the restaurant."

The driver of the car was only slightly injured and well known by Almasis.

"He is a regular customer in the market and the restaurant," he said. "He comes here with his family."

Chopper4 over the scene spotted the driver with his hands up over his head being searched by police near a fire rescue truck.

Police have not released the man's name or said what type of charges he'll be facing.

"The exact cause we do not know about, it appears to be a medical condition," said Plantation Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Joe Gordon Batt.
