OPA LOCKA (CBSMiami) -- The three people who were on board a plane that crashed in Opa Locka remain in the hospital, according to hospital officials.

A trauma surgeon Michael Lineen, from Ryder Trauma Center, said the woman in the crash is in critical condition, undergoing surgery for spinal injuries. Her husband and the pilot are both expected to be released by the weekend.  Each suffered bumps and bruises.  The pilot also has back injuries.

The surgeon is praising the actions of emergency responders and the pilot.

"The way that he landed the plane must have mitigated some of the force involved," said Lineen. "There was a significant impact, but they're lucky it wasn't worse."

A dog named 'Sugar' was also on board the plane at the time. She was released from a Hollywood animal hospital Wednesday morning. She too had cuts and a broken bone.

Earlier, authorities removed the plane from the crash site located between  a canal and train tracks.

Chopper4 was over the scene as it was being prepared to be moved to an undisclosed location.

The day before, three people and a small dog were on board when it went down minutes after take off.

They were headed to the Bahamas when family members said the pilot told them there was a fuel leak and a fire that forced them to crash-land.

National Transportation Safety Board said they are investigating the crash.
