NORTH MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) — An officer is in the hospital after being involved in a car accident.

Officer Nicole Mood is in critical condition after her patrol car was hit in North Miami Beach shortly after midnight on Sunday.

Her car crashed into a traffic light pole after being initially hit.

Rescue officials found Officer Mood unconscious and had to extract her from the patrol car before taking her to Aventura Hospital.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle that hit Officer Mood's car tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by officers.

The unidentified driver and a passenger were hospitalized and are in stable condition.

It is not known at this time whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

There was a second crash on the scene as a SUV hit a second patrol car as officers responded to the original accident.

There were no injures in the second crash and the vehicles involved had minor damage, though one passenger was taken into police custody due to a bench warrant.

Officer Mood has been with the North Miami Beach Police Department in July of 2013.

She is assigned afternoon shift patrol and is part of the North Miami Beach Police Special Response Team.
