NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Northwest Miami-Dade.

There was a large police presence in the area of N.W. 79th Street and 16th Avenue shortly after 5:00 p.m. Sunday. According to Miami-Dade Police, it all began with a carjacking that took place less than two miles away, shortly after 1:00 p.m.

Hours later, an officer spotted a vehicle matching the description. “Officers in the northside area, in the northside district, were able to see the vehicle that matched the description and once they were able to look at the tag, they were able to confirm that that’s the same vehicle involved in the robbery,” said Miami-Dade Police Department Det. Alvaro Zabaleta.

Detectives say when the officer tried to pull over the white, four-door Mazda, the vehicle took off and a short pursuit lasting a couple of blocks ensued.

“The subject went westbound on N.W. 79th street and when he approached 16th avenue, he made a right turn and attempted to go northbound, lost control of the vehicle, striking the business in the corner,” said Det. Zabaleta.

The driver then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, according to police.

“The officer pursued on foot and there was a confrontation. Shots were fired and the subject was struck. We were able to recover a firearm on the scene,” said Det. Zabaleta.

Police believe the suspect is a teenager and they’re looking into whether there’s a connection with two other robberies that took place Sunday.

“There is a possibility that this same vehicle was involved in two additional robberies after the first one that was mentioned,” said Det. Zabaleta.

According to police, the suspect was transported to the hospital in stable condition. He underwent surgery.
