MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- With floating shoes, 50 students at Florida International University took part in the annual "Walk on Water" competition Tuesday in Miami.

All students who made it to the end received an "A" and a chance to drop their lowest grade. But first they had to navigate across one of the campus' lakes - about 175 feet wide.

Stephanie Moran used rain gutters and plastic waste baskets for her float.

"I figured skis and surfboards have this very elongated look its not chunky...so I wanted to mimic that design," said Moran.

The annual competition has been running 25-years after Professor Jaime Canaves came up with the idea. He wanted his students to build something from start to finish and then test it

But, what was in it for the students?

The first student that made it across the lake got $1,000 scholarship. The second-place winner got a $750 award and the third place winner got $500.

In this case, perseverance paid off for Daniel Tabet who finished first and earned the $1,000 scholarship.
