MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Police said a 17-month-old baby died Friday after he fell from a boat while his mother was taking a nap.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, the father of the baby had gone out for groceries, leaving the child in the care of the mother.

The mother reportedly took a two-hour nap and left the child unattended. When she awoke, the baby was no longer on the sailboat.

Miami Beach Police said they received the call of the missing baby at around 5:45 p.m.

The Miami Beach Police Department, MBPD Marine, MBPD Fire, Miami Fire, Miami-Dade County Fire and Coast Guard were all called in to assist.

An officer found the baby and they immediately rushed him to Ryder Trauma Center. The 17 month old died sometime later.

Miami Beach Police said they have taken over the investigation from the FWC.

There are no charges at this time, but that can change pending outcome of investigation.

An FWC official said the couple lives on the sailboat between Star and Palm Island.

FWC added that they have had issues with this couple. The couple allegedly doesn't get along well with other people that lived on boats around them.

Authorities have not identified the couple.
