SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – The NHL and NHLPA founded the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative in December of 1998 to raise money and awareness to fight this awful disease that has touched millions of people around the world.

The Florida Panthers are proud to be a part of Hockey Fights Cancer. The team announced on Wednesday that it will host its annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night on Tuesday, October 27th when the Panthers face the Colorado Avalanche at the BB&T Center.

The Panthers will be hosting local families that have been affected by cancer, as well as children who are currently battling cancer.

There will be a table set up on the JetBlue Tarmac before the game that will have people from local non-profit and partnered hospitals to educate fans on how they can help with the battle against cancer.

Additionally, the Military Hero Among Us, which honors a member of the military at every Panthers home game, will feature a veteran who is also a blood cancer survivor.

Another gamely feature, the Community Champion, will recognize someone from the South Florida community who is working to raise awareness about cancer research.

A portion of the 50/50 raffle from the Panthers game on the 27th will be donated to South Florida cancer based charities.

The Panthers will also be supporting the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative during the next month by having players and Stanley C. Panther visit local hospitals to spend time with people battling the disease.

Fans attending the game on the 27th are encouraged to print out "I Fight For" cards which are part of the NHL's "I Fight For" initiative and to fill the name of a special person in their lives who is currently battling cancer or who has battled cancer in the past.

To date, the NHL's US and Canadian charitable foundations, as well as NHL supporters and fans, have donated more than $15 million to support national and local cancer research institutions, children's hospitals, player charities and local cancer organizations.

The Panthers face the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, October 22nd at 8:30 p.m. You can hear every game on Sports Radio 560 WQAM, the radio home of the Florida Panthers.
