OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) – Authorities are searching for a group accused of stealing items from dozens of cars at two gated Oakland Park communities.

There was a lot of broken glass left to clean up for people who live in Lake Emerald and La Estancia.

"They took change. They broke into my wife's car. They left her iPod, her sunglasses but they took change," said a victim of the car thefts who did not want to be identified.

Police who live here say investigators told them the culprits hopped the fence and they're looking mostly for money to buy drugs.

"They're a group of people. They're on drugs and are breaking into cars and trying to find whatever they can find," said resident MaryAnn Gioya.

Gioya is on the security committee. She and others said the break ins are common and when they hit, they smash a lot of windows.

"They hit at least 25 cars right now and counting. This is not just a willy nilly kind of burglary attempt," said Gina Carter

The window was smashed out of Jack Ford's Mercedes. They didn't take anything.

"We have 19 cars that got smashed in and thank God I did not leave my gun in the car this time," said victim Tom Ford.
