TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Governor Rick Scott is asking the Legislature for a million dollars create a paid summer residency program for teachers in science, technology, engineering and math.

The governor asked the Florida Legislature for the money earlier this year but legislators did not grant the request.

Scott will ask for the money to be included in the 2016-17 state budget. Legislators will consider the request during their annual session that starts next January.

If the program is approved high-tech companies would partner with the state to train teachers to bring new industry trends back into the state's classrooms.

Twenty-seven companies have confirmed their participation in the summer residency program.
