MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Parking in the popular city of Miami Beach just got more expensive.

The city's prices have gone up more than double their previous hourly prices.

According to city's website, they changed the prices to address traffic congestion in the area.

The extra money is meant to fund transportation initiatives like the free trolley system and encourage drivers to use city garages and other lots.

The new rates took effect on Monday after they were approved as part of a the city's budget.

For those not wanting to feel the increase as much, you can opt to go into the city parking garages which have not increased their rate of $1.00 per hour.

Miami Beach residents will not be affected by the hike. They will still have the discounted hourly parking rate of $1.00 per hour at curbside meters and city metered lots.
