MIAMI (CBSMiami) –A Liberty City mother, bandaged with a bullet still lodged in her leg, didn't want to talk about the shooting that landed her in the hospital with both of her kids.

The incident prompted Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho to speak out as one of the victims is a high school student.

Carvalho told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "It happened again. I wake up this morning to find a 16-year-old had been shot."

Cavalho said "Now this youngster was facing murderous bullets in our community. This is what I know. The only way to solve this is if people step up and speak up and break the code of silence and collaborate with law enforcement anonymously to let folks know who did this. There is too much grief and too much bloodshed in our community."

It happened around 1 a.m. on Monday.

Taneka Butler said she was talking with her 18-year old, pregnant  daughter Cache and her 16-year old son Carl Taylor in the gated front yard of their apartment complex on 8th Avenue and NW 70th Street when a white car with men dressed in all black drove by and opened fire.

Bullets went flying through windows and pierced cars. Taneka and her kids ran for cover but couldn't avoid the gunfire.

Butler said she was hit in the leg and her daughter was shot in the arm. Carl, who is a freshman at Miami Northwestern Senior High, also took a bullet to the arm and needs surgery to repair the damage. All three were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Butler told D'Oench that her son is going to be okay.

Detectives are looking for a newer model white 4-door Nissan Altima with dark tinted windows believed to have seen speeding of from the incident shortly after the shooting.

The family said they don't know why they were targeted but police believe the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier argument between one of the victims.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
