Police: Burglar Admits To Theft To Help Pregnant Girlfriend

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A 21-year-old man faced a bond court judge Wednesday after reportedly he smashed the front glass window of a T-Mobile store and made off with more than $1,300 worth of cell phones.

Jonathan Orihuela is accused of entering the store at 16517 NE 6th Ave. shortly before 4 a.m. on August 21st and ransacking the area behind the cash register. Police say Orihuela and another man, Brian Thorton, were caught on the store's surveillance video.

Thorton remains at large.

When he was captured, Orihuela reportedly confessed to a North Miami Beach detective during questioning.

"[Orihuela] confessed breaking into the T-Mobile store and that he was desperate for money due to the fact that he and his girlfriend are expecting a child," according to the arrest report.

Orihuela also told the detective that he injured his thumb during the burglary and that he was "only able to take a few items which he sold for $20 - $30 on the street," police wrote in their report.

Orihuela was also a suspect in another mobile store burglary. On September 22, police say surveillance cameras captured two men shattering the front glass at Simply Prepaid Mobile Store, at 81 NE 167th Street, and leaving with a box full of merchandise.

Police said he also admitted to his involvement in that burglary.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer set bond at $12,500 and ordered him to stay away from both cell phone stores.
