BROWARD (CBSMiami) – Residents of Davie and Pembroke Pines were checking their homes for damage Wednesday evening after a powerful storm passed over their communities.

In the Ivanhoe community in Davie, Bob Wolinsky said he looked out the back window of his home and heard a frightening sound.

"All of a sudden I heard a wind come through like a tornado," Wolinsky said.

Wolinsky says he ran to look out the front window and saw his massive tree down.

"I'm lucky it fell away from the house because that thing is big," Wolinsky said.

In Pembroke Pines, teenager Dustin Frier said the massive lightning from the storm left a hole in the roof of his family's home.

"All I hear is a big bang and I see a flash of light like really bright and the next thing I know is I wake up and I'm on the floor and there's a hole in the roof," said Frier.

A few miles away in Imagination Farms the rains fell and residents also heard that powerful wind.

"It sounded like a train type thing and the house was moving a little bit," Muehlenfeld said.

Brandon Muehlenfeld said he and his mom saw what they think was either a funnel cloud or a small tornado rip across the lake behind their home. Their paddle boat went flying and so did their backyard swing which wound up in the pool.

"I saw the wind actually pick it up, lift it up and drop it into the pool," Cindy Muehlenfeld said.

Fortunately that was the worst of it and the Muehlenfeld's ran to safety inside their home.

"You never know what's gonna happen," Brandon Muehlenfeld said. "It just comes out of nowhere. The wind picks up, I'd say, get somewhere safe because things like this can happen."

Ironically the Muehlenfeld's say they also survived a tornado in South Florida – the one a few years ago in Sunrise that tore through New Orleans Estates and damaged their home.
