MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A woman stabbed in the face several times Sunday afternoon remained at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition Monday.

People who knew her well tell us the man who attacked her was Carlos Yero, her married lover of about 12-years.

Miami police killed Yero during a shootout caught on camera shortly after the attack.

The unidentified woman's next door neighbor, David Bover, says she managed to get away from Yero's attack in her apartment on SW 24th Avenue and 3rd Street and run to his door for help.

Another friend and neighbor who helped the woman said her face was destroyed, cut up and dripping in blood.

"Look what he did to me!" Bover told CBS4 reporter Donna Rapado in Spanish.  "And the man was coming behind her with a plank to keep hitting her. I grabbed him and kept him outside."

But Yero returned moments later, jumping a back fence and waving a gun, surprising neighbors and responding police officers standing outside.

"And then things got really ugly," Bover said.

Police said, and neighbors confirmed, gunshots were fired.   Yero drove off with police right behind him.

Surveillance video shows officers catching up to Yero's red SUV just seven blocks away, outside the house he shared with his wife on SW 30th Avenue and 4th Street.

Yero ran up to the front door with gun in hand, but he was unable to get inside.   Police surrounded him with their guns drawn, saying they were forced to shoot him as he waved his gun at them.

Yero collapsed just behind his SUV.

Friends and neighbors of the woman stabbed told CBS4 she'd recently filed a restraining order on Yero after he beat her just days ago.

They also tell CBS4 Yero's wife knew about the 12-year long affair.

The wife's family told CBS4 she did not.
