MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Despite fluctuations in speed and strength, Tropical Storm Fred is hanging in there as it moves across the open waters of the eastern Atlantic.

As of 11 p.m, the center of the system was located about 915 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. Its maximum sustained winds have stayed at 40 mph. Fred's forward speed, as it heads west-northwest, did see an uptick from 9 mph to 12 mph.

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

Fred is encountering strong upper-level winds, is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by Friday morning and become a post-tropical low by Friday night.

Since it is not threatening any land masses, there are no watches or warnings posted for it.
