Students Charged In Machete Slaying Could Face Death Penalty

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Four South Florida students could face the death penalty after allegedly killing their classmate with a machete and leaving him to die in a shallow grave.
A Miami-Dade prosecutor said during a hearing for one of the suspect's Monday that the case will go to the grand jury. A grand jury indictment is required in Florida for prosecutors to seek the death penalty, though a spokesman for the State Attorney's Office said it was too early to say if they would.
Miami-Dade police have charged four Homestead Job Corps students with second-degree murder. An arrest report says the suspects lured 17-year-old Jose Amaya Guardado to a wooded area near the live-in school for at-risk students in June.
Authorities say that's where Amaya Guardado was hacked to death with a machete. His body was found several days later.
