MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Ahead of a possible hit by Tropical Storm Erika in Florida, Governor Rick Scott briefed the public on Thursday morning.

The governor was at the State Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee around 11:30 a.m.

He reminded the public about the basics like coming up with a game plan ahead of the storms possible arrival.

"Stay up with what's going on," said Scott."The most important thing is to think of each and every family member. Be prepared."

For those who live in evacuation zones, you may need to make plans to stay somewhere outside of the zone.

As for supplies, make sure you have enough water, canned food, flashlights and batteries. Those on medications should remember to pack that. Car and generator tanks should be filled ahead of the storm. Just to be safe, make sure any debris around your home is picked up.

"Think about what's going to happen in a storm. We are going to hope for the best but be ready for the worst. Be ready," said Scott.

The governor also touched on preps going on in the state.

"We don't have any unmet needs for that of our local teams," said Scott. "The National Guard has 8,000 members that we can mobilize. Meantime, they are going through to make sure they are ready."

The governor's talk comes a day after, the Florida State of Emergency Operations Center partially activated once the forecast models showed the state was within Erika's five-day cone of error.

Florida residents are urged to monitor the storms track and plan accordingly.
