Fins On 4 Rookie Of The Week: Jordan Phillips

DAVIE (CBSMiami) – At 6 foot 6 and 330 pounds, Jordan Phillips looks like the prototypical football player – but that wasn't the big fella's first love.

"Believe it or not I didn't really watch football. I didn't watch many sports. Big cartoon guy. It (football) was new to me," said Phillips.

It didn't look new coming out of Oklahoma.

This combine freak nearly broke into the first round, but the stigma of being a lazy player hurt his draft stock. He ended up falling to the Miami Dolphins with the 52nd pick.

"My agent protected me. He said he doesn't know if I was going to in the first. I was pretty sure – for sure I was. Picks just kept going in and in, and it just didn't happen. So I mean it was rough, but I feel like I'm in the place I'm supposed to be," he said.

Philips is now trying to prove he has the drive to be an impactful NFL player. Lining up next to Ndamukong Suh, Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon is all the motivation he needs.

"Just taking that Cam Wake approach to everything – just to tough it out. Grind and work every day to become a true professional," he said. "I think every day of how did they get to where they're at right now. Being the icons and being the best at their positions all down the line. I just want to be able to do that when it's all said and done."
