MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami Police officers surrounded the area where a car had slammed into a building Thursday afternoon after an attempted traffic stop.

It all happened near NW 7th Avenue and 43rd Street around 3:30 p.m.

Chopper4 was over the scene as numerous police cars were seen parked in the area. A dark colored van could be seen smashed into a building.

Three children were inside the van at the time of the crash. As of 5 p.m., they were doing okay.  The mother of the children as well as a relative arrived at the scene to pick them up.

"I would have been kind of shaken up and due to the fact that the children were strapped in, they did have a seat belt, they did have their car seats.... I felt elated when I heard that  ," said Jamila Ahmad, a relative of the children.

The children's father, identified as the driver, was taken into custody.

According to a major at the scene, the father was driving the van at the time of the crash. Police said an officer trying to conduct a traffic stop, turned on her lights but the driver did not stop so the officer followed the vehicle over the bridge.  The officer said when she caught up to the car, the van had already crashed into the side of a building.

It is unclear if the father will face charges.
