Poppinga: Toughness Not Measurable Until In NFL Environment
"There's a certain mentality and a certain level of mental toughness and strength that you have to have to be able to not only to survive in the NFL but to thrive in the NFL," Brady Poppinga said on the Big O Show. "And it was just apparent from the beginning that Jonathan Martin just did not possess that. And lo and behold he ended up not making it.
"That's just the one thing you can't equate, you can't measure until you get somebody in an environment like the NFL where it's highly competitive, and as he experienced to an extreme extent. He was bullied and mentally messed with, and do you know what -- I was too. There's a lot of us that were, but the ones that just stick up to it and ultimately come through that stronger, which that was what the Miami Dolphins organization at the time was hoping would happen with the guy, those guys end up sticking around and having a good career. And so it just wasn't the case with Jonathan Martin."
