LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA (CBSMiami) - A chaotic night on the the beach at Lauderdale by the Sea led Doug Young to call 911 just moments before his friend Stanley Pannaman was shot.

"There is a wacko guy here who is totally violent," Young told a 911 operator. "We need help right away."

The men were on the beach Friday night observing sea turtles about to hatch, when they say Michael McAuliffe staggered up, possibly drunk, violent and ready to fight.

"I'm 72 years old," Pannaman said, "I'm not going to have a a fist fight with a guy like this. So I pulled out my cal tech p32."

With his gun in hand, you can hear Pannaman warn McAuliffe in the background of the 911 call. "Get away from me or I'm going to shoot you," Pannaman said. Get away from me or I'm going to shoot you!" he repeated.

Pannaman said McAuliffe initially backed off, then tackled him and grabbed his gun. "I got your [expletive] gun!" you hear on the 911 call. "Is that a real gun?" the person asks.

Pannaman said McAuliffe beat him with the gun, hitting his forehead and then took aim.

Pannaman said, "I realized he was leveling it in the middle of my chest. He said, 'I'm going to shoot you with your flare gun.' I said 'it's not a flare gun it's a real gun.' I guess he didn't believe."

Moments later, Pannaman had a bullet in his side. "Lay down! Lay down!" the suspect shouted in the background of the 911 call. "I can't," said Pannaman. "Jesus Christ! Oh Jesus Christ!" shouted the suspect.

You hear McAuliffe on the 911 call moments later. "Jesus [expletive] Christ. I thought it was a [expletive] flare gun! Where are you shot?" he asked. He continued, "Oh God! Will you lay down or something?" "No sir!" said Pannaman, "I told you I can't move."

Pannaman still has a bullet inside him. The doctor said he has to wait a month for the swelling to go down to remove it.

McAuliffe remains in the Broward County Jail.
