FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - It was a movie which launched a million a tears and a career for a young unknown beauty named Ali MacGraw, and a handsome young up-and-coming actor named Ryan O'Neal.

For many, it's hard to believe it's been 45 years since the two tragic lovers lit up the big screen in "Love Story."

"It was the best picture I have ever done in my career and it was fun. Many pictures are not fun," O'Neal said. "'Love Story' was--and it was magical."

"It was a terrifying time in my life. I had never done a movie before and then "Love Story" came in and it was incredible," said MacGraw.

Now the two star-crossed lovers, who are actually great friends, are back together on stage, beginning Tuesday night, for a national tour called "Love Letters" on at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. It's about a couple whose love is strong--but never connects.

"To me this play is much like the first job we had together. It's much like Love Story, if she had lived," joked O'Neal.

O'Neal is still dapper at age 74 and MacGraw is looking timeless and elegant at age 76. The two are Hollywood icons, both with legendary love stories of their own; O'Neal with the late Farrah Fawcett and she with Steve McQueen. Their undeniable bond is what the actors are hoping will bring audiences back into the theater.

"I think audiences are going to be enormously moved and reflect on their own choices in life," said MacGraw.

"It gives love a good name and what's better than that?" said O'Neal.

"Love Letters" is on July 22-26 at the Broward Center for The Performing arts. For tickets and information, click here.
