CBS4's Irika Sargent Talks 1-on-1 With Late Late Show's James Corden

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Just months into his new gig as host of the Late Late Show on CBS, James Corden has done a little of it all.

A steady stream of big name celebrities sitting on his couch, wild skits with the most unusual props and viral videos featuring the hugely popular Carpool Karaoke.

His Carpool Karaoke segments are fan favorites and often go viral. He's done them with Iggy Azalea and tried to help her pick out a wedding dress.

He's also done Carpool Karaoke with the likes of  Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and more.

The English actor and comedian makes this new chapter in his life look easy but says he never expected this kind of success especially in America.

"If I could tell my 12-year-old self that this would be my life, his head would explode. You know," Corden told CBS4 News Anchor Irika Sargent during a recent one-on-one interview.

Corden grew up in a small town outside High Wycombe in England.

"If you are from where I'm from, just to come to America is thrilling let alone to have your own show where you get a chance to talk to people," said Corden.

Before crossing the pond, Corden starred in British television comedies and theater.  He soon made it to Broadway, winning a Tony Award for best actor in the play "One Man, Two Guvnors."

He recently worked alongside Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp in the film adaptation of "Into The Woods."

Now, hosting his own show in the U.S., he says, was a new and challenging concept for him that didn't come without a little trepidation.

"You just don't know how audiences are going to respond," said Corden.

He says he knew he had to come in strong from that very first night. It featured two A-list actors.

"As soon as Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis said they would do our first show, that sets a precedent for other people and Tom was great," said Corden.

He and Hanks concocted a funny skit showcasing every one of Hank's movies. That was a huge hit and now he is working to make each show just as entertaining.

"The best and worst thing about it is just that there's another show tomorrow and we sort of can't take our foot off the gas," said Corden. "We just have to carry on, trying to do interesting funny, brave things."

Corden says he thrives on it and cherishes the opportunity.

"It's wonderful how quickly the show has found its feet and it's amazing the response we've had from people," said Corden. "It's just been one of the best periods of my life really."

The Late Late Show airs every weeknight at 12:37 a.m. on CBS4.
