Rescue: Child Drowns In Plantation For 1st Time In 15 Years

PLANTATION (CBSMiami) – Plantation Fire Rescue said they responded to the city's first pediatric drowning in 15 years after a young boy was found at the bottom of a pool on Sunday.

It was shortly before 4 p.m. when the 4-year-old boy's father called 911 to this home at SW 2nd St. and 55th Ave.

"The child was home with the grandmother. Apparently the grandmother had fallen asleep. The child somehow got into the backyard and into the pool," said Plantation Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Joel Gordon. "When he (the boy's father) arrived home, he found the child at the bottom of the pool."

A neighbor of the family said she watched as police were the first to respond and perform CPR on the child.

"His stomach was very enlarged and everybody was crying and all the workers were crying and we could just tell he had a blue tint to his body and he was very unresponsive," said the neighbor who identified herself as Cynthia.

"We (Plantation Fire Rescue) responded shortly thereafter. We continued CPR, advanced life support, transported the child to Plantation General," said Gordon. "On arrival, Plantation General did work on the child for some time, but could not get pulses back and the child was eventually pronounced dead."

Neighbors are sending out prayers to the family and also asking everyone to be vigilant with their children.

"Please watch your babies, especially this time of year.  Don't take your eyes off them for one second because you don't get a second chance," said Cynthia.

The Plantation Police Department is now investigating the drowning.
