MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The mother of a man shot to death after he left a club in the Wynwood neighborhood over the weekend has asked for the public's help in finding his killer.

Thomas Quass, 41, left the club just after 1 a.m. Saturday with his girlfriend on his arm. As couple strolled to their car parked near NW 5th Avenue and NW 26th Street they were approached by a man who pointed gun at them.

Some words were exchanged then, according to police, Quass was shot.

The gunman then ran to a waiting vehicle, described as a 2013-2015 2-door Hyndai Velostor, jumped in the passenger side and then sped off.

"I would say this was a crime of opportunity," said Homicide Detective Frank Sanchez. "He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the gunman didn't like how things were going."

Quass was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, but died shortly after arrival.

On Monday, Quass' distraught mother Melissa asked anyone with information on the murder of her son to please come forward and help the police.

"He was a good guy. He stood up for the ones he loved," said Melissa Quass who flew in from Arizona and spoke to reporters at the Miami Police Department.

Despite some very big changes the Wynwood area has gone through in the last couple of years, some people way the hip and artsy neighborhood by day can be a little sketchy at night.

"That's very true you know. You have to be cautious. You have to be, you know, you have to know what's around yourself. So you have to definitely be cautious," said Veronica Sanchez.

Police have not given a motive for the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
