ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Orlando City Soccer says it will own and operate a USL team in central Florida beginning in the 2016 season.

The plan announced this week is pending formal approval from USL and Major League soccer. The Lions spent four seasons playing in USL before making the move up to MLS this season. Former Orlando City player and staff coach Anthony Pulis has been named head coach of the new USL club, which will aid the MLS club in player development.

As a part of this new venture, Orlando’s relationship with the USL’s Louisville City Soccer Club will change from an affiliation to a formal partnership after the 2015 season.

Officials say the name and home venue for Orlando’s new USL team will be announced in the coming months.
