Tony Awards Promise To Be Crammed With Celebs & Songs
NEW YORK (AP) — For theater fans, all eyes on Sunday night will not be on Broadway but on nearby Radio City Music Hall. It's Tony Awards night.
There will be 11 performances and 24 competitive Tonys will be handed out, some tucked in during commercial breaks. Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming will be the hosts.
The three-hour telecast on CBS starting at 8 p.m. EDT will feature appearances Jennifer Lopez, Sting, Jim Parsons, Amanda Seyfried, Larry David and Ashley Tisdale, and a stunt: Josh Groban will try to lead the most performers in a single number in Tony history.
The nominated musicals "On the Twentieth Century," ''Something Rotten!" ''The Visit," ''The King and I," ''On the Town," ''Fun Home" and "An American in Paris" will perform. A few other non-nominated shows — like Vanessa Hudgens' "Gigi" and Matthew Morrison and Kelsey Grammer with "Finding Neverland" — also will get a spot.
Producers are hoping to beat last year's average of 7.02 million viewers. But, as happened last year, the Tonys will have to compete against Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
