Med. Emergency Knocks Out Driver, 5 Injured In Accident

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A single vehicle crash on Biscayne Boulevard injured five people, including a 5-year-old child.

It happened just before 3 p.m. Saturday, when firefighters said the driver of a Jeep Cherokee had some sort of medical emergency and lost consciousness while driving on 5th Street.

"The vehicle came across Biscayne Boulevard heading east, slammed into a traffic light, hit the curb, and ended up on a sidewalk right in front of the Port of Miami sign," explained Captain Ignatius Carroll of Miami Fire Rescue.

He said the impact caused the SUV to flip on its side and hit a pole trapping two men, two women, and a child inside the vehicle.

"Good Samaritans ran over after hearing the crash and pulled out a 5-year-old little girl who was bleeding severely," said Carroll.

Firefighters removed the four adults from the Jeep and they were taken to the hospital along with the little girl.

A woman and the child were taken to Ryder Trauma Center, while the others were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Emergency Room, according to Captain Carroll.

Carroll said the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this time.

The relationship between the people in the car is not clear.

After the crash, police directed traffic while FPL responded to deal with wires left exposed by the crash.

Firefighters said it's fortunate more people were not injured considering Biscayne Boulevard is often busy, especially a Saturday afternoon.

"It's a good thing nobody else was actually walking along the sidewalk, no other vehicles were involved so this was only contained to one vehicle and the five people inside that car," said Carroll.
