Hickey on Trade Requests: We Expect Our Guys to Compete

Interviews-wqam

Miami Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey joined the Joe Rose Show on 560 WQAM to chat about the early stages of offseason preparation.

Was he ultimately surprised receiver DeVante Parker slid to No. 14 overall, where the Dolphins gladly scooped him up?

"We were glad that he slid, let's say that," Hickey said. "The likelihood was he would not be there but you never know. What you have to do is prepare for all the scenarios. That one was an easy scenario once he was there. We've liked him and he's jumped right in, been a pro, and he's just soaking up our offense."

As for veteran receiver Rishard Matthews -- who requested a trade last week with the realization he may not play much this year after the drafting of Parker -- Hickey shared his philosophy on job competition.

"It goes back to our philosophy of competitive environments," he said. "The depth charts aren't set. We expect our guys to go out and compete for jobs. You see it every year, guys that just go in and by applying themselves to their craft, getting better everyday, they surprise."
