MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With the NFL Draft fast approaching, the Miami Dolphins have announced their intention to hang on to one of their more successful picks in recent years.

The Dolphins have announced that they are exercising the 5th year option for quarterback Ryan Tannehill, keeping him under contract through the 2016 season.

The option will pay Tannehill $16.1 million in 2016. He will make just $2.1 million in 2015.

Tannehill, taken with the 8th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, was the third quarterback selected in the first round and now joins Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III as QB's who have received their 5th year option.

The additional year on Tannehill's contract comes at no risk for the Dolphins as they can still cut him following this season and pay nothing. The contract is only guaranteed in case of injury.

This move gives Miami an additional year to work out a long-term contract with Tannehill, if they so choose.

It's very likely that the Dolphins will try to work out a long-term deal with Tannehill, and the $16.1 that he'll make in 2016 is likely very similar to what Miami will offer him in a contract extension.
