TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — The Florida Senate wants new economic sanctions against Iran if the country doesn't agree its nuclear program won't be used for weapons. The Senate has sent that clear message to President Barack Obama and Congress.

The Senate approved the message on a voice vote Thursday. The two page message states that a nuclear armed Iran poses a significant threat to the United States and international security.

Sen. Joseph Abruzzo emphasized the need to protect Israel in making the case for his measure (SB 1422).

The United States and Iran are trying to negotiate an agreement that would lift sanctions against Iran if it agrees to steps and inspections that will ensure it doesn't create nuclear weapons.
