TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – Lawmakers came together to pass a bill Wednesday that would allow rural letter carriers to ride without seat belts.

The House passed the bill on an 88-28 vote. The bill now goes to Governor Rick Scott.

The bill (SB 160) allows U.S. Postal Service  letter carriers to forego seat belts while on the job and on a designated delivery route. Florida law requires all other drivers wear them.

Democratic Rep. Irv Slosberg vehemently opposed the bill. Slosberg is the lawmaker who led the effort to make seat belt use mandatory.

Before Wednesday, the Legislature had sent only 26 bills to the governor, many of which are inconsequential.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are unlikely to approve a budget before their session ends next week.
