MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Dozens of senior medical students gathered Friday for a crucial "first step" to practicing medicine.

It's called Match day and it's held simultaneously at every medical school in the United States including at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine.

This is when anxious senior medical students find out where they will be going for their residency programs.

As part of the Match day event, each students' names were called one by one.  They were handed an envelope and inside was the name of the residency training program they had been matched with.

"It went perfect for me," said Shailee Patel, a medical school senior specializing in dermatology. "I got my first choice which was the University of Miami. I am so grateful and happy."

This day was especially anxious for couples who were waiting to learn if they would be matched to the same program or be separated for years.

Greg Milligan and Chelsea Gazda wanted to stay together as a couple and they will. Both will begin residencies in internal medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans.

The day is considered a transition from their eight years of schooling to a lifetime of perfecting the art of healing.

"This is what we worked for during four years of medical school and four years of undergraduate before that," Milligan said. "This is very gratifying."
