MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Pembroke Pines Police have a mailbox mystery on their hands.

Inside a neighborhood in Pembroke Pines, at Northwest 97th Avenue and 97th Terrace, the mailboxes are dented, zip-tied back on and some are completely gone after a vandal(s) messed up 18 total between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday.

Neighbors, like Melvin Short, are upset.

"They're like bowling pins all in a row," he said.

Short said he saw kids doing the same exact thing two years ago and tried to chase them down. He said there was a kid leaning out the window whacking all the mailboxes.

Short didn't see anybody hit the 18 mailboxes. He also told CBS4 that he's learned since the last time and now has a heavier mailbox and post in place. Not the story for Gene Grazzilo, though. The vandals destroyed his mailbox.

"It's terrible kids out for a prank with nothing better to do," said Grazzilo.

Giovanni Vega, a resident in the area, said the vandalism is "just pointless," saying how some neighbors do have surveillance video of the crime but they didn't want to share for fear of retaliation.

If the vandals get caught, it could mean a misdemeanor facing six months. But if the charges run concurrent, it will be six months for every mailbox or nine years. Or it could also rate as a felony up to five years if they're caught.
