COCONUT GROVE (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade County Commissioners are facing a tough debate on how to save the Coconut Grove Playhouse.

The current county plan calls for a smaller theater to be operated by Florida International University and GablesStage.

But, according to CBS4 news partner’s The Miami Herald, Miami-Dade Commissioner Xavier Suarez and Arsht Center Chairman Mike Eidson are proposing a larger theater of about 700 to 750 seats.

The theater would be run by FIU and a new non-profit group that Eidson is forming.

The project may involve actor Kevin Spacey as artistic director—although he has, as of yet, not committed to anything.
